Anticipated Movies of 2017

I have found that recently the number of movies that I actually want to see decreases every year; the number of movies I’m willing to see in the theaters is even less.

However, this year, there a few movies that I’m looking forward to. I’ll break down the list by movies I’ll see in theaters and the movies I will wait to see when my library gets it on DVD.

Movies I Will See in Theaters:

Beauty and the Beast
Starring: Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Josh Gad, Kevin Kline, Emma Thompson, Ian McKellen, Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci
Release Date: March 17, 2017

Most of the cast alone is reason enough to see this movie. I’m a fan of Luke Evans, Emma Thompson, Josh Gad and Stanley Tucci (I’ll admit: I have no idea who Dan Stevens is and I’ve never seen anything Emma Watson has done).

Beauty and the Beast has always been one of my favorite Disney movies and was the first movie I remember seeing in theaters (I was about 3 or 4 years old when it came out).

I’m a little leery since I’ve never seen Emma Watson in anything, so I don’t know what to expect from her. Though, I’ve heard she’s made some changes to her character to make Belle more of a feminist icon. I’m not a fan of her trying to change a character as iconic and well-loved as Belle. It may work and be fine or it may end up that instead of Emma Watson playing Belle, she’ll just be playing Emma Watson. But, I haven’t seen the movie, so I’m not going to pass any judgement on her portrayal quite yet (expect a full review after the movie is released). All that being said, I am super excited about seeing the movie. All of Disney’s other live-action remakes (Maleficent, Cinderella, and The Jungle Book) have all been amazing and I’m sure Beauty and the Beast will be no different. I bought my tickets for this movie two weeks ago.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
Starring: Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush
Release Date: May 26, 2017

I’m so excited about this movie, I think I’m going to burst.

It’s been six years since the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie came out, and ten years since we lost saw Will Turner (which is no coincidence, since Will Turner can only set foot on land every ten years). I honestly don’t know where to begin with this because everything about this movie just looks so awesome. This very well may be the most epic of the series. It may also be the last. During the recently released trailer there was a title card that said “the final adventure” that’s basically letting us know this is it. However, I also read that Johnny Depp and others involved in the movies are willing to make more movies, so it may not be off the table completely.

I’m fortunate enough to only live two hours from Disney World and I plan to celebrate the release of this movie by hitting up the ride this series is based on. Yo ho, me hearties!

The Fate of the Furious
Starring: Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Dwayne Johnson, Charlize Theron, Kurt Russell, Jason Statham, Helen Mirren
Release Date: April 14, 2017

Ah! Another movie I’m crazy excited about. I love the Fast and the Furious movies; it’s one of my favorite movie franchises. Though, I’m also a little nervous about this installment because Dom has turned on his family. (!!!!!) Literally me and my sister watching the trailer together:

I know he has to have a good reason because Dom wouldn’t do that. Still, nothing can justify him kissing Cipher in front of Letty.

Part of me died watching the trailer and I expect the feels to be strong with this one (I mean, just look at that tagline).

Though, not as strong as in the last Fast movie. I’m still not over that one.

Baywatch
Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario
Release Date: May 26, 2017

O.K., so this movie isn’t going to be epic or groundbreaking or anything like that, but it is going to be tons of fun. Am I going because I want to see Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron shirtless? Yes I am.

But, I’m also going because I love fun, summer movies. This movie is going to be heavy on slow-running lifeguards and cheese, but it’s going to be funny and fun and that’s all I really want in a summer movie.

Despicable Me 3
Starring: Steve Carell, Russell Brand, Kristen Wiig, Jenny Slate, Miranda Cosgrove, Trey Parker, Steve Coogan
Release Date: June 30, 2017

Yeah. This is happening. I know a lot of people are over these movies because of the Minions internet takeover, but I can’t get enough of them. I saw the previous two movies and the Minions movie in theaters and this one will be no exception. I seriously cannot wait. The Despicable Me movies are funny and cute and everything I look for in these kinds of animated movies. This, like Baywatch, will be a fun summer movie. And it will, indeed, be awesome.

Annabelle 2
Starring: Miranda Otto, Javier Botet, Stephanie Sigman
Release Date: August 11, 2017

A couple of disclaimers: 1) I don’t know anyone in this movie (though, that’s not entirely surprising) and 2) I’m not sure if I’m particularly excited about this one. Not to say I don’t want to see it (it is on my “anticipated movies” list, after all). I’m not big into horror movies because I scare easily, however, last week we binge-watched The Conjuring, The Conjuring 2, and Annabelle and I actually enjoyed them, which is why I’m going to see this one when it comes out. But, I’m sure it’ll scare me- especially if there’s another scene like the basement/stairway scene in the first Annabelle movie.

Jumanji
Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart
Release Date: December 22, 2017

This movie is a wild card. I really want to see this one in theaters because it promises to be funny and fun. However, with it coming out so close to Christmas, it’s possible I may end up not seeing it because during that time I only want to watch Christmas movies. Still, I may end up seeing it after the holiday.

Movies I Will See When They’re On DVD:

Logan
Starring: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen
Release Date: March 3, 2017

Originally I was going to see this movie this weekend and do a review on it, but it looks like I won’t be seeing it in theaters. Not that I don’t want to, it’s just not going to work out. I haven’t see the other Wolverine movies because, honestly, they just didn’t interest me. This one obviously has a completely different tone to it, which appeals to me more than the other ones. It’s going to be more gritty and raw and less superhero-y, which is why I want to see this one.

Underworld: Blood Wars
Starring: Kate Beckinsale, Theo James, Charles Dance,
Release Date: January 6, 2017

This one, like Logan, I wanted to see in theaters. The movie wasn’t out long at the theater by me and I missed it. I’m super bummed because I love these movies and saw all of the other ones in theaters. But, unfortunately, this one was only out for about two weeks before the theater in town dropped it. But, nonetheless, I will absolutely be seeing this movie and I’m excited about it.

A Dog’s Purpose
Starring: Dennis Quaid, Josh Gad
Release Date: January 27, 2017

This movie went under fire when it was released, but it didn’t change my mind about it. A month before this movie came out, our family dog passed away and this is exactly the kind of movie we needed after that.

Like Underworld, this movie was not in the theater long so I missed it. But, my family will watch this together when it comes out on DVD. (R.I.P. Sandy)

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter
Starring: Milla Jovovich, Iain Glen, Ali Larter
Release Date: January 27, 2017

I would have liked to see this one in theaters because it just looked so badass. However, I have not seen any of the other Resident Evil movies. We planned to binge-watch the other movies before seeing this one in theaters, but there’s just so many of them and we actually don’t have that much interest in the other movies, so we never got around to it. In all honesty, we’ll probably eventually completely skip the other movies and just go right to watching this one when it’s on DVD.

Before I Fall
Starring: Zoey Deutch, Halston Sage, Cynthy Wu
Release Date: March 3, 2017

I read this book a while back, before I knew it was going to be a movie. I liked the book, so I want to see the movie. However, it’s likely the movie won’t be as good and it’s possible it’ll be disappointing, which is why I’m not going to pay to see it in theaters and I’ll wait ’till it’s on DVD.

The Mummy
Starring: Tom Cruise, Russell Crow, Sofia Boutella
Release Date: June 9, 2017

I’m actually on the fence about this movie. On the one hand, it’ll probably be fun and action-packed. On the other hand, I absolutely love The Mummy released back in 1999 (it’s one of my all-time favorite movies) and I’m sure this newer one won’t live up to that one.

Still, I’m curious and will see this.

Honorable Mentions: Movies I’ve Seen This Year, So Far

The Bye, Bye Man
Starring: Douglas Smith, Lucien Laviscount, Cressida Bonas, Doug Jones, Michael Trucco
Release Date: January 13, 2017

This movie was better than I expected. More creepy than scary, but a thriller nonetheless. Don’t think it. Don’t say it.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage
Starring: Vin Diesel, Rory McCann, Ruby Rose, Nina Dobrev, Toni Collette
Release Date: January 20, 2017

I’m ending with this one because this was actually one of my most anticipated movies from this year. It was so much fun and all kinds of awesome. It had a similar feel to the Fast and Furious movies, which is probably why I liked it so much. Two words: Becky Clearidge.

She was hilarious and adorable and basically every fangirl. She’s a huge fan of Xander Cage and the way she behaves when she’s around him is exactly the way any fangirl would behave when in the presence of an actor we adore. It’s even more accurate for me because I am, in fact, a Vin Diesel fangirl. I’ve been a fan of his since the first Fast movie came out sixteen years ago. I would have seen and enjoyed this movie for him alone. But, in all honesty, the real thing that pulled me towards this movie was Rory McCann. I’ve been a fan of his since I saw him as Sandor “The Hound” Clegane in Game of Thrones. His character in this movie, Tennyson Torch, was actually one of the comic relief characters, which was a contrast to his role as The Hound, and it was good to see a different side of him.

All in all, quite a few movies coming out this year that I’m looking forward to and you can expect reviews of the ones I actually see in theaters.

  1. By far the best movie review I’ve ever read. Lots of laughs and all the feels (Hello, puppies and F8).

I especially love the the Tom Hanks/You’ve Got Mail reference at the end. 😉
